Theoni’s first tutu – how to make a tutu

I felt in love with a tutu I saw in the craft market. They were selling them about $50. Wasn’t cheap, so at home just searched “how to make tutu” and found so many sources. Thank God for the internet. It was so easy to make and oddly enough I had all the materials needed. Tried it on Theoni and she looks so cute!!

You’ll need
1. Elastic band, I used 1″, since that’s what I had. 3/4″ should be good too.
2. Tulle – Used 20 meters each brown and white ones

I hand stitched the elastic band. It was so small, so didn’t bother with a sawing machine.

Cut the tulles about 15″ each.

Goal is to make a knot like this. I put together white and brown ones together and wrap around the elastic band. I read somewhere that makes more fuller look.

It wasn’t working out in the waste basket because you need space behind the band. So I just put it around my leg.

Keep making knots tightly and ta-da!! Added some ribbons to make it more interesting.

I was totally into it, so made a matching hair band.

I know Soames will kill me, but Theoni didn’t want to wear a hair band. I needed a model.

Pumpkin patch #1

Oct. 15th, 2011
This was the first family pumpkin patch. We visited Lynn Valley elementary school and Lynn Valley Parent Participation Preschool. Love the colour of the season. Bright orange pumpkins everywhere, light brown hays, and beautiful sunshine. Preschool set up was pretty neat. Christian did cookie decoration, play with some skulls, picked some apples from pool of water, got a pumpkin face painting and even touched live SNAKE!!! That was cool! For Theoni, she was happy to tag along hanging out with family.

Precious sibling time

Since Theoni is getting older, Christian and Theoni play together more and more everyday. It’s really fun to watch and generates some quality picture moments. Sometimes I’m just laughing so hard. I do need to separate them from time to time over one toy, but they’re getting along pretty nicely. Also Christian loves to feed Theoni. I got some pictures to prove it.

I caught Theoni playing with toilet. Can’t leave her alone at all these days.

Banana pancakes

Our whole family enjoys this pancake, including Theoni. Using very ripe banana adds so much flavour. If you don’t have buttermilk you can use sour cream and milk instead. Here is the ingredients and how to make them.

Makes 6-7 pancakes

1 large egg
1cup buttermilk
2tbsp butter, melted
1cup very ripe banana, mashed. 2-3 bananas
1tbsp granulated sugar
1cup all-purpose flower
1tsp baking powder
1/2tsp baking soda
1/2tsp salt
large pinch ground nutmeg

1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, butter, banana and sugar. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg.
2. Pour the liquid ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir together with a fork or small whisk just to combine (over-stirring makes the pancakes tough). It’s okay if the batter is a little bit lumpy.
3. Cook in a medium-high heat for 1-2 minutes each side.

My helper child!

When I was pregnant for the first time, I wanted to have a boy, thinking when he grows up, he’ll be helpful around the house, doing chores, gardening, grocery shopping and helping Dad building something. Later realized that girls are a lot more helpful like I was, so I guess I’m glad for having Theoni too. Not that I wanted to have kids for their helpful nature or anything, just part of having kids. Anyway, so far Christian is such a helpful child. He likes to help me with cleaning, helping Theoni changing, washing dishes, folding clothes, and cooking. It’s far from really “helpful” yet, but I see the willingness and potential, so why not encourage him? I put the chair front of sink and he loves to do dishes, sort of… Let’s see how this helper child plays out.

Kids play – 30 months old & 10 months old

Sept. 16th, 20011
Christian and Theoni are now playing together. Yay! It’s funny that Christian follows what Theoni does. Crawling, making noises, screaming (yes, she screams. Christian never used to do that.) etc. Theoni is a trendsetter in our household. She has this mischievous look on her face. Ready to bring down the house or something. Hopefully this isn’t really the case when she gets older.

Name wall art with ribbons

Sept. 11th, 2011
It was baby Mackenzie’s christening lunch and I wanted to make something special. Something unique and one of kind. Using ribbons and a canvas, I stencilled her name and add some accessories with wire and buttons. It was so much fun!

Used scrapbook paper cutout.

My little super hero – 27 months old

My little super hero to rescue our BBQ for summer!! Christian helped Daddy to clean BBQ, sort of. It’s a lot of fun these days Christian is talking a lot. This is how our conversation goes.

Mommy: “Where does your Daddy work?”

CL: “Best Buy”

M: “Where does your Daddy go shopping?”

CL: “Daddy go shopping Costco, raisin, grapes, warm milk, bread.” (His favourite things these days)

Motherhood

It has been more than a couple of years I have been Mom. There have been ups and downs with joy of parenting as well as pain of parenting. Watching Christian from a small baby to a walking baby and now a speaking and active toddler is the most amazing thing in the world and I’m experiencing again with Theoni. Just holding baby Theoni makes me incredibly happy. I have a purpose in my life, making sure my kids are loved, fed and well taken care of. Yes, I’m very lucky because I have the opportunity to do it. Opportunity to be a Mom.

But there is down side to staying at home Mom. My life became very monotonous and well, boring. Daily tasks of cleaning, cooking, laundry and other chores fill my time so fast that my time literally “flies”. Taking care of baby is a lot of work with lack of sleep, but once you find the rhythm, you just do what needs to do without thinking. That makes my brain less active and less stimulated hence I feel I’m losing my intelligence.

When Christian was about 4 months old, one Mom who had a toddler told me enjoy the baby moment because pre-mobile babies are easy to take care of and I’ll be missing those days. I was surprised to hear that, because I was longing for Christian being older so that I can play with him and reason with him etc., not like baby doesn’t understand what’s happening. Looking back that was totally true!! Babies are easier to take care of and just plain lovely. I’m happy that I have 2nd opportunity and I’m enjoying every minute with Theoni.

Now another Mom told me that enjoy when kids are young, because they become children, it will take a lot of my time. How can they take more of my time than now???

Well, this time I’ll believe more experienced Moms. So what now?

It seems no matter how old your children are Mom’s life is busy. The truth is my life will never be like when I didn’t have kids, even kids get older. So let’s enjoy the present. No matter what’s happening in our lives. Focus on the good and be grateful for it. I do know there is a lot to love about the baby stage. There is a lot to relish in as I am “stuck at home.” One day, I will miss it all.

New born Theoni photo session

When Theoni was about one month old last December we had a photo session with Jerry. We didn’t do this with Christian, so it was new experience for us. Jerry had lighting set, backdrop and lots of preps. He was very patient with kids and pictures turn out great! Theoni was sleeping, crying, smiling, peeing and pooping. Christian wouldn’t let go of wooden spoon and small hockey stick. Here is Jerry’s website. His price was great, too, if you’re interested.
